Arlington County’s Board Office seeks an experienced Assistant County Auditor (Deputy). Working under the general supervision of the County Auditor, the Deputy will assist in the administration of the County Auditor’s Office by coordinating with management to conduct financial and operational audits. This position will coordinate and collaborate directly with County leadership and external agencies on audit execution.
Responsibilities for Internal Candidates
Specific duties include:
- Performing all statutory duties of the County Auditor in his absence;
- Assisting in planning, organizing, reviewing, and directing staff’s work activities;
- Assisting in establishing and implementing departmental policies, procedures and methods to ensure that related work complies with departmental standards, policies and procedures;
- Establishing and maintaining statistical records of department functions and providing technical assistance on difficult or complex departmental work problems;
- Planning, scheduling, and conducting audits of departments, divisions, programs, services, or other entities focusing on revenue enhancement and cost containment;
- Analyzing, evaluating, and summarizing simple to complex financial and statistical data and translating financial accounting information into cohesive and comprehensive profiles for organizations being audited;
- Reviewing financial and other business records to evaluate financial controls for revenue leakage and identifying programmatic deficiencies;
- Writing audit observations and recommendations to address financial and/or programmatic gaps; risks and
- Preparing audit reports and performing special investigations as assigned.
The Ideal Candidate will be an experienced executive with a strong record of achievement in the following:
- Assisting in establishing the County’s Auditor’s Office’s operational standards and procedures;
- Responding to difficult problems or questions while exercising sound judgment;
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationship with county officials, county employees, public and private officials, and the public; and
- Possess innovative and strategic thinking with the ability to see the broader picture, while simultaneously managing other issues and projects.
Qualifications for Internal Candidates
Minimum:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or other related area; and
- Significant experience conducting financial, operational, programmatic and/or compliance audits.
Desirables:
Preference will be given to applicants with experience in performance audits or government programs and one or more of the following:
Writing skills to:
Compose audit observations and recommendations; compile, edit, and finalize clear, concise, and accurate audit reports; and develop procedures and policies;
Thorough knowledge of auditing procedures and standards, Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS);
Knowledge and understanding of effective and efficient procurement and revenue collection controls;
Problem-solving skills to define problems, collect relevant information, and recommend policy solutions;
Reading, interpreting, and applying state and local government laws, regulations, and codes related to the County Auditor’s Office work;
A basic awareness of risks associated with construction projects and other complex contracts; and/or
Experience supervising subordinate employees in an Auditor’s Office in a government or related environment.
Licenses/Certifications:
CPA, CIA, CISA, CFE or other risk management certifications may be preferred.

Additional Information
Work hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week including some evening and weekend work. Opportunity for telework is available; however, this is not a full telework position and will not be converted to a fulltime telework position in the future.
