Dear Fellow Members,
This “May” Newsletter is intentionally late as I, like much of the world, was waiting in anticipation of May 25th – also known as “GDPR Day” – or the day that compliance to the European Union (EU) privacy regulation went into effect. The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requires organizations collecting Personally Identifiable Information of EU citizens to explicitly receive permission to do so and follow strict rules surrounding its use of this data. Despite the threat of stiff fines upward of 4% of a company’s global revenue or 20 million Euros, whichever is larger, only 26 percent of EU businesses claim to comply with the requirements of the standard. As it turns out, a few days after May 25th, many organizations continue to struggle with what exactly is required and fear it will create barriers to trade. If your organization is still scrambling, ISACA’s GDPR Portal continues to be a good resource for organizations still struggling to meet or maintain the requirements of GDPR.
Another reason for this late letter was my desire to highlight the activities of your Board of Directors and a few additional key volunteers. This past weekend, we held our 2nd annual strategy and planning meeting to begin the process of reflection and planning for the new chapter year. Please join me in thanking everyone for their continued dedication and commitment to re-thinking ways to innovate and improve the services we deliver to provide even more value to our members. At $40/year, I think we’re doing pretty well! As always, we welcome your feedback.
