Academics Relations Team, started the summer with sponsoring an early careered professionals cybersecurity panel for the GenCyber Summer Camp 2018 at Marymount University on July 10, 2018. Academics Relations goals are to foster new relationships, inspire confidence that enables innovation through technology, to promote an early awareness of Cyber Security , and provide support & an avenue for professional networking by connecting the classroom and industry professionals. Alok Kakker, ISACA GWDC Chapter Vice President emphasized on the purpose of the Academics Relations Committee led by Committee Director Teresa Skehan that GWDC support and efforts towards the goals is extremely important to bring new generation with professional knowledge they need in their early careers.
There were 30 High School students in attendance this year from across the United States. Bryan Calabro, Brand Coordinator at Belcan Government Services and Sushant Sen, Information Security Officer at Capital One were on the panel which was moderated by ISACA GWDC Associate Director of Internships and Innovations, Babur Kohy. The panelists have experience in the commercial and federal sectors in the cyber and IT domains. Discussion topics ranged from describing a typical day on the job, the dark web, the importance of higher education, community service, to differentiating oneself in the highly competitive and demanding field of cybersecurity. Students were engaged throughout the conversation by asking questions and sharing their own experiences relative to security.
“From tiptoeing the dark web, maintaining an ethical compliance, and navigating the competitive job market after graduating, presenting a young professionals perspective to these students enables them to get ahead of their peers and see the fun in the future of cybersecurity,” said Bryan. This statement proves that getting the students involved early on has positive impact to the workforce for years to come.
GWDC Academics Relations Team is proud of this accomplishment less than a month into the new fiscal year. The Team will continue to deliver on its promise of developing lasting relationships with the academic community based on trust and mutual interest. The next event will be a panel of security experts for the same summer camp on July 17, 2018 at the Marymount University.
