Dear Fellow Members,
The ISACA family has lost a great leader and a truly amazing person earlier this week with the passing of John Lainhart. John was an ISACA volunteer for over 40 years and served as the ISACA International Board Chair from 1984-1985. Even in recent years, John served on or chaired many working groups to further research or continue to develop the COBIT framework to what it is today. ISACA’s John Lainhart Common Body of Knowledge Award was named in his honor for major contributions to the development and enhancement of the common body of knowledge used by constituents of the Association.
I began my career working for John at IBM and learned first hand what sort of impact a great leader can have on an organization and the people within it. John was the reason I joined ISACA in 2006 and started volunteering within the organization soon afterwards. Even after John moved on from IBM, he continued to check in on me. John exhibited a level of personal care and selflessness that is rarely seen.
I never cease to be amazed by how many people John positively impacted. His personal and professional legacy spanned the globe and he was held in such high esteem by everyone. When I was on business travel for IBM or ISACA and told someone I worked for IBM, they always seemed to ask if I knew John Lainhart.
Many of the current and former GWDC Officers and Directors worked with or for John at some point in their career. His guidance and mentorship directly or indirectly supported the chapter for many years. John was an active attendee at many GWDC events. He was a speaker at many of our events and presented the V. Lee Conyers Award to recent recipients. In addition to being a colleague of V. Lee Conyers, John was a recipient of the award in 2008 for his impact on the profession.
We may have lost a great leader this week, but great leaders like John develop many future leaders to follow in their footsteps to make a lasting impact on others, take the road less traveled, and blaze a new trail. His legacy will continue to live on through countless people he touched through his dedication to supporting to others, give back to the profession, and loving devotion to his family.
As Terry Grafenstine noted in her post about John Lainhart, I also encourage everyone to carry forward John’s legacy by supporting others, giving back, and making a difference in any way possible. It will matter so much more than you may ever know.
